ABOUT
Fiona-Lee releases ‘Mother’ (live from Abbey Road Studios), out today (May 29th) via Gravity / Capitol Records.
Recorded as part of their Equalise Sessions for International Women’s Day, a diversity programme designed to promote music production and engineering as a credible career for young women / non-binary people, Fiona-Lee’s ‘Mother’ captures the musician’s enigmatic live show in its rawest form.
Marking the sixth year of Equalise, the programme has previously offered free panel talks, mentoring and masterclasses with artists, producers, engineers, managers, A&Rs and talent across the music industry. This year, the programme offered six days of immersive recording workshops, providing hands-on learning opportunities to inform, inspire and empower young people. Each day saw eight aspiring female or non-binary engineers shadow the Abbey Road team on a real recording session with some of the most happening names in contemporary music.
Discussing her new live version, Fiona-Lee explained: “As a young woman that’s had some pretty rough experiences working with men in music, sharing a safe space like this with like-minded people felt really special, and 18 year old me would’ve benefitted loads from this community.”
Tackling themes of vulnerability, shame and grief in her music, Yorkshire native Fiona-Lee channels formidable vocals, remarkable storytelling and crunching sensibilities into guitar-driven anthems that are already resonating with audiences far and wide. Lauded throughout the press landscape via key titles including The Telegraph, DIY Magazine, Dork Magazine, Rolling Stone UK, Clash Magazine, The Line Of Best Fit and Under The Radar, as well as becoming a mainstay on the BBC Radio 1 (Nels Hylton, Sian Eleri) and BBC 6 Music airwaves (Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Amy Lamé), Fiona-Lee’s live prowess has certainly developed at an impressive rate following a recent tour support run with The Amazons. Primed to showcase acclaimed debut EP ‘Nothing Compares To Nineteen’ across the festival circuit this summer, East Yorkshire’s newly-proclaimed “answer to PJ Harvey” is ready to bring her music to the masses.
Fiona-Lee’s ‘Mother’ (live from Abbey Road Studios) is out now via Gravity / Capitol Records and available on all digital platforms.
